When you think about holiday traditions, what do you picture? Something magical from your childhood maybe? Something you long to do but don’t? Holiday traditions are a great way to create memories as a family. And let’s face it, they are fun!
Here are some fun holiday traditions suggested by our readers, and a couple of my personal favorites.
“We make salt dough Christmas ornaments every year, some to give to family for their tree and some to keep.”- Sarah Hansen
"Santa sends our family a box full of Christmas PJs, a Christmas movie, fun little snacks and hot chocolate for the whole family." - Melissa Burt
“We always watch Elf on Thanksgiving evening after eating to kick off the Christmas season.”- Kari Thul
"After eating Thanksgiving dinner my aunts and uncles would take us bowling." - Ashley O'Flanagan
“As a kid, we got up early the day after Thanksgiving to go Christmas tree hunting and then we’d stop for pie on the way home. We’d watch Muppet’s Christmas Carol while decorating the tree.”- Deanna Stone
"My Grandparents always had us over on the 23rd of December to make gingerbread houses, followed by bowling or a movie." - Ashley Proctor
"We wrap twenty-five Christmas books and put them under the tree, unwrapping one each night and reading. On that first night, we unwrap Christmas pajamas, have hot cocoa and cookies."- Karlee Parker
“Every year we got to open one gift Christmas Eve night and they would be pjs.” Liz Stieben
“One week before Christmas each kid neatly placed a pair of shoes outside of their bedroom door because Santa’s elves come to visit and place a little something in their shoes. It’s an exciting lead up to Christmas.” - Jeannie
"Everyone gets new pajamas on Christmas Eve to wear to bed and then all-day Christmas." - Whitney Sparling
"We do Christmas Eve boxes with a new book, pajamas, movie and decorate your own hot cocoa mug."- Nicole Hostetter
"The kids get up early to open their stockings before the parents do."- Maria Boyer
"Every year we do a theme for stockings. We also do a plastic wrap holiday ball."- Polly Hilmo
"I take each kid shopping to buy a present for their sibling. They love it!" - Karlee Parker
We love driving around to see all the colorful Christmas lights. Our Christmas fun starts the day after Thanksgiving. We spend the day decorating the house inside and out, putting up our Christmas tree and baking cookies. We always have holiday music playing throughout the day and we end with a favorite Christmas movie.
One of my favorite traditions growing up, and still today- the Christmas lights game. While driving you are always on the hunt for Christmas lights, once you spot them you will say "Christmas lights to the right/left" and whoever finds the most (gets the most points) wins. It's something we've always done, that I absolutely love.
